PALO DURO
TOMMY ALVERSON/Country to the Bone:
The Alverson produced “Luckenbach Compadres- Songs of Luckenbach” put him on our radar and not a moment too soon. Now in the 10th year of putting on a Willie style Texas music festival, this set is a limited festival edition and it shows there’s still a lot the net can be exploited for. There isn’t much hint of Nashville on this Texas set that sounds like some of the best Texas stuff we’ve heard over the years that never seems to creep much north of the panhandle. Good time music, very well played, this is a regional record that mixes a lot of regions into the mix and makes a great companion for a long drive through uninterrupted stretches. A certified under the radar winner.

No Depression –Jan- Feb 2008
TOMMY ALVERSON –Country to the Bone (Palo Duro)
Tommy Alverson fiercely hews to the time-honored Texas country music tradition—a little swing, a little twang, a lot of heart. He’s a mentor, producer, festival promoter, songwriter and singer who takes responsibility for keeping boot marks on the honky-tonk hardwood floor. This fourteen track disc features full–band versions of Alverson originals, (“Second Hand Love”, a reprise of “Texas Woman”) plus tunes by Doug Sahm (“Be Real”), Jim Lauderdale (“I’ll Still Be Around”), Mickey Newbury & Doug Gilmore (“She Even Woke Me Up to Say Goodbye”), Brian Burns (“Upside Down”), and Roy & Jerri Lynn Robinson (“This Buzz is for You”).

What would Cowtown be without both kinds of music, country and western? It wouldn’t be Cowtown, would it? Thankfully, Fort Dub’s C&W scene is as vibrant as it is diverse, full of old hands and newcomers who ride off into the sunset on a lot of different horses. Tommy Alverson has been at it for years, and when he started getting some commercial radio airplay a couple of years ago for his catchy complaint, “Una Mas Cerveza,” everybody in the scene essentially said, “Well, it’s about damn time.”

Anybody who’s anybody in Texas Music has at one point or another shared the stage with Tommy A, including Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker, and Ray Wylie Hubbard, along with “young’uns” like Robert Earl Keen, Pat Green, Charlie Robison, and Jim Lauderdale. Alverson’s Texas Music Family Gathering is also fast approaching its 10-year anniversary.
Basically, if there is such a thing as Cowtown Country Music’s elder statesman, he’s it.
